What is Lighter(LIT)? LIT is now available on WEEX Pre-Market
Lighter is a fully verifiable decentralized exchange (DEX) built with custom zero-knowledge (ZK) infrastructure, inheriting Ethereum's security and composability. It operates as a ZK rollup on Ethereum, optimized for speed, throughput, and scale, generating ZK proofs for all operations including order matching and liquidations. Lighter enables trading of digital assets like perpetual futures with zero fees, low latency, and verifiable fairness, eliminating risks from centralized operators.

Team & Background
Lighter was founded with a focus on building infrastructure for the future of finance, emphasizing efficiency, security, and verifiability. The team includes experienced builders operating through a U.S.-based C-Corp, with strategic partnerships and investors such as Robinhood and Coinbase. The project is backed by top-tier venture capitalists and angel investors. Acknowledgements in the whitepaper extend to experts like Scott Wu and Jacob Willemsma for contributions to discussions on the protocol's design. Lighter has achieved significant milestones, including a public mainnet launch and processing around 500 million orders and cancels daily.
Technical Architecture
The architecture of Lighter includes:
- Sequencer: A low-latency engine that processes transactions into blocks, integrates oracles, and commits batches frequently while limiting operator power to ordering only.
- Prover: Generates SNARK proofs using custom circuits to verify state transitions, order matching, risk management, and updates, ensuring cryptographic correctness.
- Indexer and API Servers: Handle data formatting for users and provide interfaces for queries and transaction submissions.
- Smart Contracts: Manage assets, state roots, proof verification, and priority transactions on Ethereum, with an Escape Hatch mechanism for fail-safe withdrawals if commitments are missed.
- State Tree: A Merkleized structure with components like Account Tree (for user details and positions), Public Account Tree (for verifiable asset reconstruction), Market Tree (for order books with fee configs), and a specialized Order Book Tree for efficient price-time priority matching using leaf indexes.
- Lighter Block Circuits: Prove block executions, including pre-execution updates (funding, prices) and multi-cycle operations via an Instruction Stack.
- Multi-Layered Aggregation and Blob Circuits: Aggregate proofs for batches, verify blob data equivalence, and submit final PLONK proofs to Ethereum.
This design combines advanced cryptography, novel data structures, and hybrid data availability to deliver high-performance trading with public verifiability.
Application Scenarios
Lighter supports use cases in decentralized finance (DeFi) and beyond:
- Perpetual Futures Trading: Verifiable order matching with price-time priority, liquidations, and risk management, offering low-latency execution comparable to traditional exchanges.
- Spot Trading and Prediction Markets: Extensible to spot assets, lending protocols, and prediction platforms with tight spreads and reduced MEV.
- Public Pools and Insurance Funds: Enable participation in strategies without direct trading and provide liquidity backstops.
- Real-World Assets (RWA) Integration: Bridges traditional finance (TradFi) and DeFi by adding verifiability and composability, supporting risk-adjusted returns and capital efficiency.
- Market Data and Price Validation: Uses staking to incentivize verifiable data for trading and risk management.
Future expansions include a side-car VM for general computation and fair sequencing to minimize residual MEV.
Ecosystem
Lighter's public mainnet is live, featuring the highest transactions per second (TPS) among Ethereum Layer 2 solutions. The ecosystem includes open-source circuits for verification, audited for perps and spot trading. It has conducted points seasons, yielding 12.5M points for community airdrops. Built on Ethereum, it benefits from the largest DeFi ecosystem while providing verifiable infrastructure for traders, institutions, and developers. Recent updates include publishing smart contract architecture via L2Beat and verifier contracts on Etherscan.
